Grand Master Kim Tate: A Half Century of Dedication and Mastery

Introduction

In the world of martial arts, dedication and commitment are the pillars upon which mastery is built. Grand Master Kim Tate's martial arts journey is a testament to unwavering dedication, lifelong learning, and the profound impact of a remarkable mentor.

A Fateful Encounter

Kim Tate's journey into the world of martial arts began in the Spring of 1973 when he was a 17-year-old student at Louisiana State University (LSU). Feeling somewhat lost on the college campus and lacking a clear sense of direction, his life took a transformative turn when he stumbled upon a poster advertising a Hapkido demonstration led by Dr. He-Young Kimm, who had recently arrived in Baton Rouge.

Early Days of Learning

Kim Tate attended the Hapkido demonstration, an event that would spark a lifelong journey of discipleship under the guidance of Dr. He-Young Kimm. From the very beginning, Dr. Kimm was an active teacher who led every class, trained alongside his students, and pushed them to excel. The training regimen consisted of repetitive practice, with a focus on four techniques per week: one locking or choking technique, one strike, one kick, and one throw.

Lessons Beyond Techniques

While the technical aspects of Hapkido were undoubtedly important, it was Dr. Kimm's philosophy and life lessons that left an indelible mark on Kim Tate and many others. At the end of each class, Dr. Kimm would deliver philosophical lectures, offering insights on how students could not only improve as martial artists but also as human beings. These lectures, often delivered in sweat-soaked uniforms, carried profound significance and impact.

A Lifestyle of Dedication

Training under Dr. Kimm wasn't confined to the classroom. It became a seven-days-a-week lifestyle. Weekends were devoted to traveling to out-of-state tournaments, demonstrations, and seminars. The dedication to continuous improvement was a shared commitment among Dr. Kimm's students, forging a strong bond of camaraderie and a shared pursuit of excellence.

A Life's Foundation

Grand Master Kim Tate reflects on the profound influence Dr. Kimm had on his life, stating, "Dr. Kimm made me a better martial artist and a better husband, father, brother, and friend. He built my life's foundation and set me up to win." The impact of Dr. Kimm's teachings extended far beyond the dojo, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to shape Kim Tate's life and character.

Grateful Tribute

In closing, Kim Tate expresses his profound gratitude to Dr. He-Young Kimm, acknowledging the countless ways in which his mentor has enriched his life. He recognizes that Dr. Kimm's name is not only etched in the annals of the Martial Arts world but also in his heart. The tribute serves as a heartfelt acknowledgment of the profound influence of a mentor and a master.
