Early Beginnings
Dr. Penny Serio, born on January 8, 1957, in Oblong, Illinois, embarked on a remarkable journey that blended her passion for veterinary medicine with martial arts. After graduating from high school in 1975, she pursued pre-med studies at Indiana State University. In 1979, her path took an unexpected turn when she was accepted into the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. During her final year of veterinary school, she began her martial arts training under the guidance of Do Ju Nim He-Young Kimm.
A Fateful Decision
Initially planning to return to her hometown upon graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Serio made a life-altering decision to remain in Louisiana. Her motivation was to continue her training under Dr. Kimm. This choice would not only shape her martial arts journey but also lead her to meet her future fiancé, Jamie Serio.
Dedication and Accomplishments
In 1983, Dr. Serio accepted a position in New Orleans but continued to travel regularly to Baton Rouge to train under Dr. Kimm. Her dedication and commitment bore fruit when she attained her black belt in Kuk Sul in 1985, becoming the first woman to receive a black belt from Dr. Kimm.
Over the next ten years, Dr. Serio, along with her husband Master Jamie Serio, raised their family while deeply involved in Han Mu Do. They also traveled with Dr. Kimm as he worked to develop and spread Han Mu Do worldwide. During this period, they actively contributed to editing books and developing curriculum for the art.
A Lifelong Journey
The ensuing three decades of Dr. Serio's martial arts journey included achieving ranks in various Korean martial arts disciplines, such as Tae Kwon Do and Hae Dong Gum Do. Dr. Kimm's philosophy of encouraging black belts to study other martial arts and his generous provision of master instructors for their training played a pivotal role in her continued growth within the martial arts community.
A Historic Achievement
In 2020, Dr. Serio reached a historic milestone by completing the eighth Dan test, making her the first female Grandmaster in Han Mu Do. With 41 years of martial arts training under her belt, she is now entering the fifth decade of studying under Do Ju Nim He-Young Kimm.
Dr. Penny Serio's journey is a testament to her unwavering dedication, pioneering spirit, and relentless pursuit of excellence in the world of martial arts. Her accomplishments continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations of martial artists, particularly women, in the Han Mu Do community.
