Master Harold W Wilson Jr. began his initial martial arts journey in 1970 at the age of 12 in the Korean art of Tang Soo Do. The instructor was very good. But even at that age and after seeing various martial art movies and documentaries, he realized all that was being taught were the physical aspects of Tang Soo Do. Even at a very young age he wanted to know about “Ki” or inner power. His martial art training was interrupted, however, as he entered into Catholic High School in Baton Rouge and scheduling conflicts halted his Tang Soo Do training. In 1975 he ran across an ad for Hapkido classes. This was his first meeting with Dr. He-Young Kimm. He marveled over the quality of the instructors in the dojang and he also started learning about “Ki” for the first time. “Ki” was explained as an inner power of self-control for the purpose of training the mind and physical control of the body, thus, joining the mind and body for constructive uses in ones life. Upon graduating from Catholic High School and entering first, Louisiana State University, and then Southeastern Louisiana University, his martial art career, again, entered limbo. Something always got in the way – classes; graduation, marriage, and then children! When his children were 5-6 years old he decided they needed an organized outlet in which to grow up and learn. About this time a friend arrived at his house with a book entitled Han Mu Do. Inside the book he once again found Dr. He-Young Kimm. He at once could see his life coming full circle. “My family’s journey in Han Mu Do started that day.” He received his 1st degree Black Belt in Han Mu Do in April of 1995. He now realized that after 3 years of training “my cup was more empty than full.” In the following years he adopted a martial arts philosophy stating that “My Black Belt lives inside of me. I use the knowledge, patience, and Ki training to help people I meet and work with. It has helped me to look on the bright/positive side of everything life has sent my way, including helping friends who have been down.” In 2005 Master Wilson was awarded the 5th Dan in Han Mu Do. Although his martial art journey has also included a 3rd degree Black Belt in TKD he still says, “My cup still has more room and I try to learn from everyone I meet.”
