Mr. Carr became interested in martial arts when he was a teenager in the late 60's with martial art stars like Bruce Lee and movies like Billy Jack, but he never had the opportunity to train under an instructor. He tried to learn as much as he could from books & magazines and would train on his own. In 1971, Mr. Carr met his wife, Jennifer, and the married in 1974. In 1977 he joined a health club to get back into shape and to loose the 65 pounds that he had put on since he had married, the manager of the health club, Rowdy Yates, held a black belt in Kyokushinkai Karate and agreed to teach karate to the health club members. In 1978, Mr. Yates was introduced to J.R West. Mr. West first introduced Mr. Carr to Hapkido and to his Hapkido master, Dr. He-Young Kimm. Mr. Carr had the opportunity to attend several seminars under the direction of Dr. Kimm which greatly influenced his martial art development. In 1989, J.R. West called to inform David of another seminar in Jackson, MS to be taught by Dr. Kimm. He also suggested that Mr. Carr plan on attending the Black Belt meeting at the conclusion of the seminar. Little did he know that what started that evening would change his martial arts career forever. Han Mu Do was in its beginning stages. Since that day, David has been a devoted student of Dr.Kimm. Believing that Han Mu Do is the best system currently available, he respects and admires the qualities of the Grandmaster. David has not missed a major seminar at the school headquarters since they began.
